People
around the world must admit that English is an international language in which used
for communication by many people around the world. The existence of English can
not be separated with the discussion of the standard English that people around
the world use in communication. People who speak or use English as second or
foreign language consider that the standard of English that they must imitate
is American English and British English. They think that their
English competence, either on speaking or writing, will be considered good when
they follow the style of American or British. What people think toward that
case is actually incorrect. Although English is only language that used for
international communication, it does not mean that different countries must
have same way in using English. the way of every country speaks or uses English
is called Englishes.
According
to the classification, Englishes is
distinguished into three parts, they are English as Native Language (ENL),
English a Second Language (ESL), and English as Foreign Language (EFL). ENL
refers to English that used in countries where English is the primary language
of most population. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and the
United Kingdom are countries in which English is said to be spoken and used as
native language. ESL, on the other hand, is spoken in countries where English
is an important and usually official language, but not main language of the
country. These countries have characteristic in which they are ex-colonies of
the United Kingdom or the United States. The countries that speak English as
Second language are Nigeria, India, Malaysia, and Philippines. The final
classification of Englishes is EFL. EFL occurs in countries where English is
not actually used or spoken very much in daily life. English is usually used for
English learning at school, but students have little opportunity to use English
outside the classroom. China, Indonesia, Japan, and many countries are
countries in which use English for Foreign Language.
